5 Signs Your Furnace Needs Attention Before Winter Hits

Alberta winters don't leave much room for error, and a furnace that's struggling in October usually fails outright by January. Catching the warning signs early is the difference between a routine tune-up and an emergency call at midnight.

Short-cycling — where your furnace turns on and off more frequently than usual — is often one of the first signs something's off, whether it's a clogged filter, a thermostat issue, or a sizing problem. Unusual noises like banging, screeching or rattling are also worth a call; most start small and get more expensive to fix the longer they're ignored.

Rising energy bills without a change in usage, uneven heating between rooms, and a yellow (instead of blue) burner flame are three more signs to watch for. A yellow flame in particular can point to incomplete combustion, which is a safety issue, not just a comfort one.

The simplest fix is prevention: an annual tune-up before the heating season catches most of these issues while they're still inexpensive to resolve. If you're noticing any of the signs above already, it's worth booking a diagnostic before the temperature drops any further.
